Naxos
Island is the largest island of the Cyclades and has a variety of excursions
to propose to the visitor. This is not the list with all the Naxos
excursions but those we have chosen for you.
- The Kastro:
The Kastro(which means Castle in Greek) was build by the Venetian
Marco Sanudo when he conquered the Cyclades in 1207 and made of Naxos
his headquarter. Kastro is located on the higher point of Naxos Town.
It is the only place in the Cyclades which was designed by an engineer.
It is a Venetian quarter with many things to see: beautiful mansions
in paved streets, old administrative monuments, churches, convents,
towers, square…
- The Portara(big gate):
the Portara is the trademark of the island of Naxos. It is the huge
6 metres marble gate of the ruins of the temple of Apollo. It is situated
on an islet reachable by a paved walkway.
The temple was built in the 6th century by the tyrant Lygdamis and
was left unfinished when the tyrant abdicated. The Portara was built
in the direction of the sacred island of Delos and that is the reason
it was related to the God Apollo.
- The area
of Apollonas: Apollonas is a beautifull fishing village situated
in the north of the Island. It has a small sandy beach lined by many
fish tavernas.
Near the village is situated the famous and impressive Kouros: It
is a 10.5 metres statue lying on the ground. It is dated to the 6th
century and was never finished. The statue should represent the god
Dionysus.
- The village of Apiranthos: It is charming mountain
village situated 32 km from Naxos Town at an altitude of 650 metres.
It is considered as one of the most beautiful villages of the island.
The village has some impressive Venetian houses. Some cafés
offer a breathtaking view over the valley. The village has also 3
interesting Museums.
- Plaka beach:
It is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. It is a golden
and endless sandy beach with crystal waters. It is quiet beach, with
umbrellas and sun beds in some parts. Some other parts are isolated
and have kept their natural beauty.
- Other excursions: the island is so large that it
has a numerous of interesting excursions to propose to the visitor.
Wherever you choose to go, you will always be impressed by the landscapes,
the beauty of the villages and the wealth of traditions.
